Admission Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

1.         Institution certification— Be accepted by an institution certified by SEVP. The college or university you intend to attend must be authorized by SEVP, under Immigration & Customs Enforcement.

2.         Fees and I-20 Form Collection— You need to pay both a visa application fee and a visa issuance fee. Once you have paid the SEVIS fee, you will be given an I-20 form from the school or college you plan to attend. Fill out the form correctly and bring it to your F-1 visa interview.
 
3.         Fill out Form DS 160 and Prepare for the Interview— Before the interview with a US consular officer, students will fill out an online visa application called Form DS-160.
 
4.         Sufficient funding— You must show that you have adequate financial resources to support your education and living expenses while in the United States.
 
5.         English language proficiency— You need to meet the English language proficiency score required by your institution or enroll in courses that will enhance your English skills.
 
6.         Valid passport— Passport must remain valid for at least six months after the end of your program for travel to the United States.
 
7.         Full-time enrollment— You need to be a full-time student at the institution during the academic term.

8.         Home country residency— You must have a permanent residence in your home country to return to after finishing your degree.

Before your visa interview, ensure you have the following documents prepared for review by the consular officer:
1)    A valid passport
2)    Copies of photo you will use for your visa
3)    Printed forms of your DS-160 and I-901 SEVIS payment confirmations
4)    I-20 form
5)    Transcript of records and Official test scores needed on your university application
6)    Diploma (if applicable)
7)    Proof of funding or Bank statement
8)     English Proficiency

Work while studying in the USA

Students with an F-1 student visa can work in the US, but they must adhere to specific F-1 visa regulations:
A.    Part-time on-campus work is allowed during the academic term.
B.    Working hours are limited to 20 hours per week during the term and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
C.   Off-campus work may be permitted with university approval.
D.   F-1 students cannot work off-campus during the first academic year, but may accept on-campus employment subject to conditions and restrictions. After the first academic year, F-1 students can engage in three types of off-campus employment:
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) (pre-completion or post-completion)
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) OPT
E.    Full-time work is allowed during academic breaks if authorized by the university.
F.    Before seeking employment while studying, obtain approval from your DSO (Designated School Official).
Note that, upon completion of your program, you have a 60-day grace period to depart the US.
